Champions League 2024/25: New Format, Schedule, and Participating Teams

UEFA Finalizes Details for Major Champions League Reform

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced the final details for the comprehensive Champions League reform that will take effect in the 2024/25 season. The revamped format promises significant changes to the structure, scheduling, and participation criteria of the prestigious European club competition.

New Format and Schedule

The most notable change in the Champions League format is the expansion of the group stage from 32 to 36 teams. The 36 participating clubs will be divided into six groups of six teams each. Each team will play 10 matches in the group stage, with the top four teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage.

The round of 32 will feature the 16 group winners and the 16 group runners-up. The knockout stage will continue with the familiar format of two-legged ties, leading up to the final, which will be played at a neutral venue.

Participating Teams

The number of teams participating in the Champions League group stage will also increase from 32 to 36. The allocation of places will be as follows:

  • 16 automatic qualifiers: Top four finishers from the top eight ranked UEFA national associations (based on previous seasons' UEFA club competition results)
  • 8 direct qualifiers: Team ranked fifth in the top eight ranked UEFA national associations
  • 10 qualifying teams: Winners of the UEFA Champions Path, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Europa Conference League
  • 2 extra qualifying teams: Based on UEFA club coefficients

Conclusion

The Champions League 2024/25 season marks a new era for the competition. The expanded format, revised schedule, and increased participation will create more opportunities for clubs to qualify and compete at the highest level of European club football. UEFA's reform is expected to enhance the overall quality and excitement of the Champions League, making it even more captivating for fans around the world.
